It is a recreational settlement situated at the "Way of Freedom". It is a suitable starting point for hikes to the eastern part of the High Tatras.

There was a Veľká Lomnica manor close to the settlement in the Middle Ages, but it - most probably - burned down at the beginning of the 15-th century. The settlement Tatranské Matliare was founded in 1884. It was a private summer resort of Matej Loisch. He decided to build here a couple of hotels in 1889.

Newer buildings, such as a luxurious hotel Esplanade, were built between the World Wars.

After the World War 2 Tatranské Matliare was administered by military health service. Later, other new hotels and sanatoria were built. The most dominant are the hotels Metalurg and Hutník.
