Dolný Smokovec is a recreational settlement in the High Tatras, specialised in healing child tuberculosis (the bone- as well as the lung-tuberculosis).
Jozef Bohuš, a teacher in Kežmarok, was the first one who initiated to build a cheap hostel close to Starý Smokovec (Old Smokovec) in 1881.
Unfortunately, he did not succeed in fulfilling his plans, because of lack of capital. The Kežmarok Bank Company bought the unfinished building from him and rebuilt it into a summer residence of Ungarian aristocracy. The first phase of the town´s history was characteristic by building a lot of noble summerhouses. The first bigger hotel (nowadays it is called Vila Kollár) was built in 1889. Gedeon Majunke, an architect from Spišská Sobota, was the one who projected all the buildings with wooden chapels from 1890´s.
During the World War 1, a military sanitary-house was opened in Dolný Smokovec. From that time forward the settlement remained in hands of public health service. Soldiers were replaced by children with tuberculosis. Another modern healing house with internal and surgeon pavilion arose according to the project of J. Marek (architect) in 1931. It is still a central object of the complex.
A residential area Pod Lesom is an administrative part of Dolný Smokovec, too.

NOTE: Administrative part of the town Vysoké Tatry (High Tatras)
